Celebrate Black History Month with These Soul Food Recipes
Happy Black History Month! At SKILLR, we’re taking time to learn and staying true to our mission to provide greater access to knowledge, entertainment and coaching services for all people. We’ll also be highlighting the work of some of the amazing Black experts on the app throughout the month.
And, we’re celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Black American people—but it’s not a celebration without food! Whether you’re part of the community and looking for ways to celebrate or you’re an ally looking to learn more about Black culture, cook up some soul food to set things off.
Can’t stop cheesin’
Mac and cheese, everyone’s fave cookout staple, was first said to be brought to the U.S. by Thomas Jefferson, but historians note it was actually James Hemings, his enslaved chef, who popularized the French dish and made it what it is today in American culture. This baked mac & cheese recipe from The Soul Food Pot is extra cheesy and seriously mouthwatering. Video call a Skillr if you need some assistance in getting your cheese to noodle ratio just right.
Butter me up
Biscuits can really set off any dish. They’re a small but mighty side and there are a ton of amazing recipes online that you can test out until you find the one you fuck with most. Personally, I’m a big fan of the buttermilk biscuit recipe from Toni Tipton-Martin’s “Jubilee: Recipes from Two Centuries of African American Cooking” (seriously, I make them once a week). But these recipes (also from Black chefs) look equally delicious and come highly recommended on the interwebs:
Soul food but make it brunch
Day or night, chicken & waffles hit the spot. There are a few different stories about the origins of this delectable treat floating around online but what everyone seems to agree on is that there’s a rich culinary history behind it. The most common story traces back to 1930s Harlem where chicken & waffles were served at a jazz club called Wells Supper Club. The dish was said to be popular with musicians after they finished performing, as it was a satisfying combo of dinner and breakfast foods. Grab this recipe from Sweet Tea & Thyme.
