What is Dating Anxiety and How Can I Overcome It?

Dating can feel like an amusement park. The roller coaster of emotions during those first initial stages of dating can be exhilarating at best and psychological torture at worst.

But there’s no need to fear! I (or another SKILLR dating coach) can help you navigate it. In this blog, I’m sharing some expert tips on how to overcome some of the anxieties you might have while in the dating game.

What is dating anxiety?

Dating anxiety is the feeling of intense worry, doubt and distress experienced during or before interactions with dating partners or potential dating partners.

Of course, it’s normal to have a bit of butterflies in your stomach since you want to make a great impression.

You might stress about what to wear and what to say. You might become nervous that you’ll say or do something embarrassing and end up looking like a damn fool. It happens to us all. Yes, even us dating experts at SKILLR have been there.

The dating scene can sometimes feel like we’re wandering off into a freak show, but before you let the horror get the best of you, there are a few key ideas to remember.

They are probably just as anxious as you are.

While dating, we can easily get caught up in feeling like we’re putting on some award-winning performance. We’re aware of our own flaws and imperfections, and subconsciously we know that if we stumble, those imperfections can ruin the “performance.” However, the thing we forget is that we aren’t Hugh Jackman starring in “The Greatest Showman.” This isn’t really a performance. It’s about human connection. We sometimes fail to remember that the other person likely feels the exact same way we do, and they’re hoping they’re good enough.

This person already likes you.

Try not to put so much pressure on yourself to be perfect because if someone is going out with you, then they already like you. Most people don’t go out on dates with people they don’t like. If he or she has agreed to a date, then they already think you’re attractive and cool enough to spend time with, so try to relax.
