The benefits of yoga class
Yoga has many benefits ranging from the physical, the mental and the spiritual (if that’s your thing). Incorporating it into your lifestyle can help with emotional regulation, fitness and general wellbeing. Here are just a few of the many benefits of the practice.
Stress management and improved mental health
There have been several studies done on the impacts of yoga on mental health, specifically anxiety, depression and general stress management. According to Healthline, a 2017 study concluded that yoga was an effective alternative treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Another study published in 2020 found that yoga, while slightly less effective than cognitive behavioral therapy, was still helpful for managing the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder.
In addition to helping manage the symptoms of mental health disorders, yoga can benefit anyone dealing with stress (...so all of us). Because yoga invites us to slow down, pay attention to and observe our emotions, thoughts and bodies, it’s an effective way to move through our stress and find some freedom mentally.
Better sleep
With more relaxation in your life, you may find it easier to get some shut eye. Doing a little yoga before bed can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. If you’re curious about the right yoga practices to try before bed, consider a yoga nidra practice.
Yoga nidra is a style of yoga that involves body scans and breathing exercises. It’s similar to meditation but focuses more on being in the space between consciousness and unconsciousness instead of being present and focused (trippy, right?). It’s designed to help you let go, release and fall asleep.
Body awareness
Depending on how you were raised, you may not think much about your body, how it moves or how it feels during the day-to-day. Yoga invites you to explore the sensations you experience every day, both internally and externally.
You also gain body awareness as you respond to the yoga instructor’s cues telling you where to put certain limbs or to make slight modifications such as knitting your low ribs in or softening through your arms.
Increased flexibility, bone health and muscle tone
Those looking to begin a yoga practice for the exercise benefits will be stoked to hear about a 10-year study that was published in 2015. The study found that daily yoga raised bone mass density in the spine and femur, in addition to reversing osteoporotic bone loss. Yoga can also help improve your posture, make you more flexible and tone your muscles. The benefits are truly endless!

Types of yoga classes
There are a wide range of class types when it comes to yoga. Exploring them all can help you figure out which ones you most enjoy and provide the best benefits for you and your individual goals.
Restorative yoga
Imagine the snuggliest, warmest, coziest evening. Perhaps, there are candles going with your fave scents. Maybe you’re wearing your comfiest pair of sweats. Or, maybe for you that looks like a massage or a warm bath. Whatever the coziest shit you can think of is, that’s how restorative yoga can feel. Can you tell it's one of my favorite styles? In this style of yoga, you’ll stay in each pose for an extended period of time.
Many of the poses in restorative yoga are supported which means you’ll also use lots of props such as blankets, bolsters and blocks. If you’re doing a restorative class at home and don’t have props, you can always use regular blankets and pillows instead.
Vinyasa yoga
Vinyasa yoga classes tend to be more active and in them you’ll flow between poses and focus on breathing throughout. Because they’re a more active class style, they’re perfect for those who want a bit of a challenge and those who want to focus on strength and toning.
Hot yoga
This style of yoga is bringing the heat. Hot yoga is just like it sounds. You’re doing yoga in a yoga studio, usually with infrared panels or another form of heat. This style of yoga is perfect for you if you’re looking to sweat it out or for a little intensity.
Kundalini yoga
Kundalini yoga is a sacred practice that involves breathwork and chanting. This style of yoga can be pretty intense and challenging the first few times you try it (even for regular yoga students). But it’s definitely worth trying as it can help you release a lot of stuck energy in the body!
Consider trying kundalini if you want to engage with the spiritual elements of the practice more or if you’d like to have some emotional release.
Hatha yoga
In a Hatha yoga class, you’ll focus on strength and alignment as you move slowly and mindfully through a series of poses. In a Hatha flow, you typically hold each pose for a few breaths.
Yin yoga
In need of some self-care? Yin’s got you covered. Yin is a gentle style of yoga that works with the connective tissue including the fascia, joints, ligaments and bones. In this style, you hold the poses for extended periods of time (usually five minutes). It’s a great style to do if you’re feeling especially contemplative, wanting to hold compassionate space for yourself or looking for a class with a slow pace.
Ashtanga yoga
Adventurous or well-practiced yogis might enjoy a little Ashtanga. This class uses the same series of movements or poses (called the Primary Series) and takes around 90 minutes to complete. Ashtanga isn’t the best class for beginners due to its difficulty level but it’s something to aspire to down the road.
Prenatal yoga
Practicing yoga while pregnant can help with relieving pain, improving mood and preparing your body physically for giving birth. Prenatal classes consist of poses that are safe for pregnant women and, in addition to helping ease pregnancy symptoms, can provide a space to connect with other expecting moms.
These are just a few of the many styles of yoga! From goat yoga to outdoor and acro yoga, we encourage you to experiment and find the styles that work best for you.
