Types of meditation

There are several different types of meditation. Read a bit about each of them and consider trying them all out to find the one you identify with the most.

Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation is one of the most commonly practiced. When practicing mindfulness meditation, you’ll typically sit down or lie on your back, bring your focus to your breath and shift your attention to your thoughts. Be aware of physical sensations in your body. While doing this, it’s important to let any judgment pass and bring the focus back to the breath and thoughts if you become distracted.

Mantra meditation

Do you tend to get distracted often during meditation? Mantra meditation could be the style for you. In this practice, you’ll select a mantra and repeat it back to yourself mentally or verbally. Some people choose to use affirmations, Sanskrit phrases or other positive statements, such as “may I be at peace.”

Loving-kindness meditation

Loving-kindness meditation or metta meditation focuses on feeling love for self and others. It’s the perfect pick-me-up when you’re feeling down and in need of some self-compassion. This style of meditation usually takes you through a series of well wishes towards the world at large, a person you care about, a person you don’t have any particular feelings towards, a person you don’t get along with and yourself.

Zen meditation

In this meditation practice, you sit, most often in a variation of the lotus position. The focus of the practice is to simply sit, breathe and discover insight into your mind and body.

There are a ton of other types of meditations you can try, including qigong meditation, guided meditation, insight meditation, chakra meditation, visualization meditation and vipassana meditation.

Benefits of meditation

Like we mentioned, the physical and psychological benefits of meditation are vast and many studies have been done to investigate the ways this practice can influence physical health, mental health and emotional health. Below are just a few of the many benefits:
