The ABCs of Taking a Stellar Headshot

Pick a backdrop
Before you even think about clicking that shutter button, you’ll want to get some planning out of the way. “There are a few things that go into creating the perfect headshot,” Mariama explained. “The first thing we need to talk about is the backdrop. I recommend a clean background against a plain wall or backdrop.”
Get a look together
Once you’ve decided on the location of your shoot, it’s time to start planning your look. You can do so with the help of a professional stylist on the SKILLR App if you need a little guidance. “You want to make sure you’re wearing a color you feel great in—one that’s not too distracting and would stand out on your background,” Mariama said.
Frame it
Ok, so you’ve got your background and ‘fit selected. Now, you’re almost ready to start shooting. Before you do, you’ll want to get some technical things figured out.
“If you’re taking the headshot yourself, I would recommend using a tripod or placing your phone [or camera] on a stable surface and using the self timer,” Mariama shared. “The frame of the headshot should be just below your shoulders with minimal space left above your head. The most important thing you need is a good and stable light source. Natural light is best but a ring light or LED light could also do the trick. Make sure you’re fully and well lit then snap away! You’re on your way to the perfect headshot.”
