Tips for Crushing Your Goals

Are you ready to start planning and achieving with a healthier mindset than you might’ve had before? Are you looking ahead and thinking about how to go after what you want or even just want to learn a few new things this year? If yes, use these tips to get started!

Make it measurable

One way to create goals that you can successfully crush this year is by making them SMART. “Alexa, what are SMART goals?” You might be asking. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. The term was first used in a 1981 paper by George T. Doran published in “Management Review.” SMART goals give you a clear picture of what actions you need to take to get from point A to point B, as well as how long it will take to get there. Using this structure can help take the guesswork out of goal setting.

Let’s say you want to get really good at doing makeup. You could set a goal to learn 12 new makeup looks by the end of the year. To accomplish this goal, you could:

  • Research and buy relevant supplies

  • Decide on the looks you want to learn

  • Meet with a makeup artist each month to practice a new look

  • Try to recreate each look on your own (calling for backup when you need it)

Before you know it, you’ll be pretty damn good at beating that face. The goal? Accomplished. Your face? Stunning.

Go easy on yourself

Cue Adele’s latest bop because your mental health matters, boo. That’s why we encourage you to approach any new ventures or goals with mindfulness. Instead of putting pressure on yourself to do things perfectly or to see results immediately, show yourself a little love and respect. If you’ve let your goals fall by the wayside, don’t beat yourself up. Pick it back up when it feels right.

One helpful thing to do when planning and achieving your goals is to pay attention to how you feel in your body when you think about the goal. Does your chest tighten with anxiety? Do you feel a burst of excitement and energy? These bodily reactions can serve as cues to when you need to put down a goal or charge full speed ahead.

Ask for help

There’s a reason they say teamwork makes the dream work. Accomplishing goals or learning new skills is so much easier when you have teachers, tutors or even just support from another human. At SKILLR, we believe in the power of community and think everyone should have access to experts. You can get support for your goals by using the app to match with pros to teach you guitar, help you write a song, learn to grill a mean steak or whatever your heart desires.

Take your time

There’s no rush in making your dreams come true. It’s easy to get caught up in what everyone else is doing and all of the things they’re accomplishing. You might find yourself scrolling through Insta or TikTok and wondering why you haven’t managed to find a hot partner, spend a year abroad, learn to bake bread or get a promotion yet.

Pardon my French but fuck that noise. You’re on your own timeline and it doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s in order to be valid. You are valid. Your timeline is valid. Trust and believe, baby! If we’ve learned anything in the last two years, it’s that we can plan all we want but shit happens that we can’t control so take your time, go easy on yourself, ask for help and make it measurable!
